Artist Statement
Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it." -- Robert Motherwell
Why Art? And, why my art? The classic question for any artist's statement. Art is a form of play.
Remember finger painting? Dipping your finger into liquid, looking at the huge piece of paper before you, and dragging the finger in a swoop across the paper? Now, that is magic. What about the first time you saw the 64-color box of Crayola crayons, with the built-in sharpener? Remember Spirograph, Etch-a-Sketch, Play-Doh? For all the high-flying rhetoric regarding the value of art, I see it as a highly focused form of play. As the singer and conductor, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau said: "In fact, the element of play has an important role in my life, and I think that should be the case in the life of every artist. Our life is occupied with playing, whether we play an instrument or a role."
Why my art? Because it is the most fun I have ever had in my life. Because I love to do it. Because I didn't stop in 6th grade, as most people do. I persevered. All the talent in the world is worthless without perseverance.
I work primarily in digital art, drawing freehand on my iPad Pro, Apple Pencil between my fingers. My preferred app is the Sketch Club app, available on the Apple App Store. I also enjoy digital photography. But, understand, the works created on iPad do not start with an image load. Drawing freehand means, the iPad is the blank canvas, and the pencil leaves its marks. To see more of my iPad sketches, see them on the Sketch Club website: https://app.sketchclub.com/user/16505705
One more quote: "People see my photos and think I labor over my image and I'm this cool, brooding artist. But I'm just having fun with it." -- Lenny Kravitz
